Seattle (Image Heavy)

I had a chance this weekend to go to Seattle for the National Art Education Association 2011 Conference.

I didn't spend a lot of time roaming the streets as I was busy at the conference, but here are the photos that I managed to snap while in the state of Washington.

Seattle skyline view from the hotel.

Seattle has some really cool architecture, I like how this is not too out there but has some extra interest with the slanted roof.

Vegan sweet potato enchiladas.

Some photos from Seattle Art Museum:

And lastly, the Nick Cave Sound Suit Exhibit!

I did take a few photos of the work before I realized it was not allowed, so I will not post them up here: I don't want to get in trouble or represent his work in a way he would not agree on....but seriously, check out this work! It is AWESOME!

Happy Monday!

This post is inspired by Danielle over at Sometimes Sweet. I love reading her blog and her positive outlook! I felt a sense of renewal and excitement to walk into my job this Monday morning, after the National Art Education Association Conference I was at in Seattle. I also really missed my students, so today definitely feels like a fresh start!

Danielle wrote five goals to better herself for the week, and so I will write out my goals as well, using her categories.

Nutrition: This week I am logging everything that I eat, including those pesky snacks that get in the way. (I think that maybe if I know I have to write it down, that in itself may help me make good choices!). I am also going to make a big soup that I will partly freeze and partly put in containers to bring to work for lunch this week. I will not buy any food out this week, or lunches out this week, and will wait until the weekend if I want to get food out (saving my money and all together avoiding a chance of food poisoning again!)

Exercise: I am going to strap on my rollerskates and get outside and skate! I miss playing Roller Derby so much, and I think it will be nice to work those muscles again even though I don't have time to commit to a league right now.

Relationships: Honesty is the very best policy. I am going to be honest with myself and others no matter what. This week I will continue to foster positive relationships and be sure to call my family, friends, and set up some friend dates! I am also planning a little surprise for my special someone.

Creativity: I will be working on finishing a painting that was commissioned, and I will make at least one skirt and a dress this week! I can't wait to break my sewing machine out after weeks of dormancy!

Me-time: I am actually really good at this. Having Malomar helps because my walks in the park with him are definitely a time to myself and thoughts! In addition to this, I am going to set aside one night where I don't bring my work computer home and I leave work at work! This will take some work and I may have a panic attack, but I am going to try!

And, like I was inspired to...if you also jot down 5 "better yourself" goals for the week, post the link below so we can all share!

xo!

Honza's Birthday (Image Heavy)

It was my sister's hubby's birthday and we gathered as a group to celebrate. What better way to celebrate a birthday than a burlesque show?

We went to Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO to Floating Kabarette and had such an awesome time. If you are in the NY area, I highly recommend this as a Saturday night experience. It is amazing, fun, and inexpensive! I didn't get any photos of the acts, because I assumed that you could not bring your camera, but I will be sure to be back and document some of the amazing music, trapeze acts, and amazing and talented women dancing paired of course, with lots of humor!

The dancers were amazing and talented, and man do I want to learn how to do ribbon dancing! SO COOL!

Here are some photos of the group from his birthday!

The Floating Kabarette burlesque show is every Saturday and there are different artists showcased each time, if you are in the area, check it out! If you like stuff that rules, you won't be disappointed!

Sunday's Song

Oh my! It is spring and SO awesome outside! Malomar and I went on a long walk, and I am seriously considering strapping on my roller skates, changing the wheels to outdoor wheels and skating the path at the Park. I haven't skated in a long time, and man do I miss it! I just don't have time for Roller Derby right now...but maybe again soon!

Today's song is one I absolutely love. Each time I hear it I think of driving with my friend Bryan to go on a long hike last summer. You know when a song just brings you back to a time and place and you can just smell the air that surrounded you as you were driving with the windows down? Yup...that is this song for me!

What's in my Fridge

These are the things you will typically find in my fridge and freezer nearing the end of the week. It is strange, but also a fact that I never let my fridge get completely barren. I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing. Ideally I would only shop once a week and I would get everything I need for the week that would last until I shop again. This is absolutely not the case.

This is how I shop for groceries.

On Sunday, I head to the Farmer's Market and I get as many supplies as I can that are local and at the market. During this time of year I usually get some onions, potatoes, cashews from Cashew Guy*, greens (like kale, bok choy, salad greens, broccoli), and apples and apple cider. If there are things that the Farmers Market does not have, I try to find locally sourced things at a couple different markets throughout the week. Union Market, Whole Foods Market, and Back to the Land sometimes all get hit up during the course of one week.

Both Union Market and Back to the Land are very pricey, and so I try to get more of my things from Whole Foods, which price for price is a lot cheaper than even places like Fine Fare (at least for the kind of food that I will purchase anyway).

Things you will usually find:
Organic Silk Soy Milk, or Edensoy when i am trying not to consume soy lethicin
Smart Balance or Earth Balance which I use on my bagels or as a substitute in baking
Pacific Organic Vegetable Broth (when I am too lazy to make my own)
Glass Bottle of Water that I refill (got this as Pompidou and love it!)
Seltzer or club soda
Sprouted wheat bagels
Whole Foods Oat and Nut bread
Ekezial wraps
Coffee Beans
(Sometimes I have things like lemonade or pineapple juice when a recipe calls for it or it is on sale...otherwise I mostly drink water, or club soda mixed with a bit of berries or splash of dark cherry juice)

Staples:
red miso paste
tahini
kalamata olives
homemade mustard made by Marek
dark cherry juice (to mix with club soda/seltzer)
baby dill pickles
vegan worcester sauce
soy sauce or braggs
rice vinegar
chili oil

greens
radishes
basil
tomatoes
spring onions
mushrooms
avocado
shallots
ginger
potato
onion

soy boy ravoli
vegan meatballs
boca chik'n patties
frozen berries
frozen bananas
peas or edamame
and of course soy ice cream!

The freezer is where I generally have things for smoothies, which I drink almost every morning (mixed with almond milk), and also where I keep things for those long days where I don't want to cook from scratch. Things like Boca Burger chicken patties and Soy Boy ravoli and vegan meatballs are purchases that happen about once a month because I try not to rely on too much processed food in my diet.

The same goes for things like Smart Balance, Vegenaise and other vegan substitutes. I try to limit my consumption of these products due to all of the unnatural ingredients in them.

The more you think about what you have in your fridge, before you go shopping, the better equipped you are to purchase for the week. I try to keep as many healthy alternatives in my fridge and pantry as possible. After all, when you get the urge to snack and you have kale, you can make baked kale chips...would you do this if you had cookies in your pantry as well? Doubt it, and kale chips RULE!

In addition to this I always have fresh fruit in a fruit bowl on my table. When I get the urge to snack, I am more likely to eat a clementine, banana, blood orange, apple if they are right out in the open.

I also noticed that the presence of my glass water bottle has increased my water drinking habit ten fold. I highly recommend keeping chilled water in your fridge. You can even keep water with some orange slices, lemon slices, cucumber slices or herbs in it!

Weekend Recap

Most of my weekend was spent resting and recuperating, but having a dog means I always have to get out a few times a day, which I think, even when you are sick, is a really good thing!

Alex and Malomar on a walk.

Flowers are budding! These are the first buds that I have seen so far, so exciting.

I am starting to feel a bit better, the antibiotics are kicking in. This is what I wore to a painting trade party. I LOVE the idea of trading artwork with friends, so fun!

I found a great place to hang out and get work done! Tea Lounge is so cute and has a nice atmosphere and vegan treats! Not to mention they take credit cards. (with a minimum, hence the vegan carrot cake which I clearly could not eat on the BART diet.) There are SO many places in NY that are cash only, which is incredibly annoying to me. Don't they know I am trying to rack up points?!

Malomar and I at the park.

It was a very nice and sunny weekend, I can't wait for more to come!

Don't Buy It, DIY It!

Whenever I get the intense girlish urge to shop for things I can't afford, I remember...I have a sewing machine and a little bit of know-how under my belt. I will say this a thousand times, I am not a seamstress at all...but you do not have to be a seamstress to make your own clothes! I find that making clothing works just like any other artistic problem solving, and just because you don't get it right the first time, doesn't mean you should give up!

One of the first things I did before I made my own clothes was simple altering like making my jeans tighter, or band t-shirts fit me. All I did for this was turn the garment inside out, lay a garment that fit me exactly the way I like it to (think your perfect tee), and then trace with soap an outline of the snug garment over the ill fitting one. From there you just straight pin the piece and do a simple straight stitch to alter your piece. Always try it on before cutting out the extra fabric...if you are new the game you may want a seam ripper close by so that you can try try again if your first attempt fails.

From there, I started taking apart clothing to understand the panels and parts and the ways in which it fit all together. It was sort of like being a little kid and taking apart a radio and trying to piece it back together...but in this case, I would trace the panels on new fabric and try to put together my OWN piece of clothing. I really learned by trial and error. Of course I can always learn more, but after all of this experimenting, I now can make my own clothing, make clothing for others in various sizes, and custom fit clothing for other people. It feels great to know who made your clothing, and feels even greater when the piece is special and no one else has it. For those of us who failed at sandbox, doesn't it feel great to have a custom piece!?

I made this top and skirt which paired together make a really fun outfit, that is one of a kind. That is one of my favorite things about making your own clothes, you can make only ONE of the piece if you want, which guarantees that you will not show up to a party wearing the same damn dress as someone else!
