Sunday's Song on a Monday

Hey guys! I am on the road and could not update my blog from my android as much as I tried...just didn't work.  I just woke up in Maryland and was an amazing breakfast and am feeling great!  We are headed over to play pinball at Silver Ball Museum, so awesome!  Here is Sunday's song on a Monday!

I cannot get this song out of my head, I love it so so much.

Lana Del Rey, Video Games.

Enjoy!

Sunday's Song

I am well aware that it is Monday and I am posting a Sunday's song...but this is the song that was coursing through my brain yesterday during my best friend Melissa's wedding.

So many countless nights dancing with her, each of us throwing one arm up in the air, the other hand on each others hip screaming and laughing and smiling and loving....

and being best friends...

Sunday's Song

Hey guys!  I am back to the daily grind and schedule of work again, we started back up officially August 2nd...so that means I will be back to some more consistent blogging.  I don't have that long of a break during summer away from teaching, so I really wanted to take that time to unplug {as much as humanly possible in the 21st century} and enjoy the fresh air, travel and spend plenty of time with friends!

On Friday night, I headed over to "East Williamsburg" (which is realtor speak for Bushwick) and went to The Acheron to see Braveyoung.

When we arrived at the venue, which...since I moved here has been the first place in NYC to remind me of Olneyville, Braveyoung was set up and ready to play.

The music was dreamy and pretty, with builds and releases that reminded me of the ocean.  It made me feel like Braveyoung could easily write the score to a Pan's Labyrinth-esque film.

Sunday's Song (Music Monday)

{I was unable to post this song yesterday from the road b/c I lost my phone! So here it is, a day late...still beautiful, still very appropriate...}

Now to go find a new battery charger for my camera, and see what to do about my phone mishap.

Sidenote: I am not sure that I am really spiritual but I believe in fate, or that things do happen for a reason...and I really think that my phone disappeared on me or was stolen for a reason. Even if it wasn't...I find that it makes it easier to think like this...to agree that some magical dragonfly is swooping in watching over me. Maybe I needed to be late enough to miss the last train back to Brooklyn, maybe it was important to sit on the front porch a little longer. Maybe if I had my phone I would have texted while driving and crashed my car...maybe I just needed a hiatus...or to feel what it is like to disconnect for a little. Who knows...it is ironic that I lost my phone though right after a long conversation about how we as humans used to get by just fine, if not better before cell phones.

Without further pause...here is Sunday's Song on a Monday. Beck, Lost Cause:

{The more new memories I make in my old town, the easier it gets, the better I feel. This weekend was so much fun, and I will post photos really shortly of my trip up to Providence!}

Sunday's Song

This is absolutely one hundred percent the way I have been feeling lately.
Do you remember the first time you saw this video?

I was absolutely obsessed with this video and Billy Corgan and trying to figure out the deal with James Iha who so so captivated my little girl heart.

Smashing Pumpkins - Today by boufougik

{This video totally rules, and so does this song}

I hope your Sunday is filled with ice cream trucks, painting with your hands, hay fights, bubble gum and a cowboy hat or two.

Sunday's Song

Archers of Loaf is playing a reunion tour, and playing in my city...woop woop! I haven't seen any of these guys since I saw Crooked Fingers 10 million years ago down south. I can't even remember where I was, but I know it was a fest and I remember that they played in some sort of auditorium(???), and they walked through the crowd, violins in hand, and played the most beautiful set ever. I think I was in North Carolina, or near there, which makes sense because they are from Chapel Hill.

{Here is Eric Bachmann performing Lusia's Bones}

I will remember the kisses
our lips raw with love
and how you gave me
everything you had
and how I
offered you what was left of
me,
and I will remember your small room
the feel of you
the light in the window
your records
your books
our morning coffee
our noons our nights
our bodies spilled together
sleeping
the tiny flowing currents
immediate and forever
your leg my leg
your arm my arm
your smile and the warmth
of you
who made me laugh
again.

Sunday's Song

{Something lately has gotten me really nostalgic.}

I have been listening to a lot of music that I used to listen to a LONNNG time ago in the morning on the way to work. I've been singing along to Propaghadhi, The Get Up Kids, Crass and Beastie Boys driving down Malcolm X at 7am. I remember all of those mornings, piling into one of my friend's crappy cars, windows down to push the smoke out (I know I know) speeding down windy farm roads...taking long cuts on the way to school. We were prolonging those moments before the bell rang and we had to sit for hours on end in classes, unable to scream along at the top of our lungs to music that made us feel alive a little rebellious...a little bit like we weren't teenage kids living in Lancaster Pennsylvania.

This song came on yesterday on my way to Providence and a wave of joy washed over me. I couldn't stop smiling as I was singing along again, top of my lungs..."S-S-S-Someone's gonna ask you what it's all about. Stick around nostalgia won't let you down...."

happy sunday!

Sunday's Song

Seriously, Four Minute Mile is such a good album...yeah, I said it!

I remember being so in love with The Get Up Kids when I was in High School and I would take my "long" drives to Lebanon from Lancaster blasting this album. My friends and I traveled all up and down the upper eastern states to see The Get Up Kids, screaming along to their music with our super cuffed jeans, short black hair, hoodies on and huge water bottle in tow. Also, during this time I was listening to a lot of powerviolence, grindcore and screamo and all of that crap...and went through a small bout of never wearing shoes...no big deal, totally normal stuff.

Every time I hear these songs I think of those trips. One particular trip that comes to mind is this time I went to go jumping on rocks with my buddy Wibbs. We rode in his VW beetle into a wooded area and we would jump from rock to rock in a stream. We would literally say, let's go jump on rocks. That was a normal hang out at that time. Of course, being super clumsy, one day we were jumping rock to rock and I fell into the stream. I remember listening to this album with my hand out of the window, holding my pants, with about 12 hoodies wrapped around my waist as to conceal my probably totally lame skivvies.

Ahh memories.

I also put in Michelle with one L...for my Ma Dukes. Happy Mother's Day to all of you moms out there!

Sunday's Song and Flashback

Okay, so here is a plug for a band I absolutely love. Brown Bird, who resides now in Providence... (where I just moved from and lived for a very long time...and yes, Providence still feels a little like home to me).

Brown Bird is such a talented, amazing band made up of very humble and sweet band members. For my 29th birthday, my then boyfriend threw me a surprise party in our apartment and Brown Bird played. It was the best surprise ever! (Well that and the fact that he also gave us two tickets to France to travel there on my February break...hello amazing!).

This is one of my favorite Brown Bird songs, By The Reins. Listen the the lyrics, I can certainly relate to them. So beautiful.

Sunday's Song

Since Deer Tick has been my soundtrack for my Sunday Morning routine, and because I was in Providence yesterday, Sunday's song pretty much has to be Smith Hill from Deer Tick.

Sad lyrics, but Deer Tick is amazing, and being in Providence is usually bittersweet. Enjoy! xo

Sunday's Song (Whole Living Action Plan!)

Today's Whole Living Action Plan Daily Challenge is to take 10 minutes or more to workout or get your body moving, so even if you don't have a long time to get to the gym, do not underestimate the benefits of a quick run, some weight training, or even a dance party!

I can't help but shake it to almost all of Yelle's songs, here is Je Veux Te Voir by Yelle:

(lyrics not for the faint of heart...but if you don't know French you can just pretend that she is singing about wholesome things!)

Sunday's Song

Oh my! It is spring and SO awesome outside! Malomar and I went on a long walk, and I am seriously considering strapping on my roller skates, changing the wheels to outdoor wheels and skating the path at the Park. I haven't skated in a long time, and man do I miss it! I just don't have time for Roller Derby right now...but maybe again soon!

Today's song is one I absolutely love. Each time I hear it I think of driving with my friend Bryan to go on a long hike last summer. You know when a song just brings you back to a time and place and you can just smell the air that surrounded you as you were driving with the windows down? Yup...that is this song for me!

Sunday's Song

Bikini Kill was one of those bands that made me feel SO empowered as a young girl growing up in Lancaster Pennsylvania. I remember listening them them just made me FEEL badass, even if I wasn't.

Here is Sunday's song, for that closeted Riot Grrl inside of you: Bikini Kill's Rebel Girl.

Sunday's Song

I love when this song comes on when I am on my way to work, or I am on a run, or walking my dog Malomar! There are so many amazing songs that I want to feature here, and artists that I really love...but I find myself on Sunday's always wanting to listen to something really upbeat...something that makes me want to get up and go and get a million things accomplished.

Here is Sunday's Song, Moving Units: Anyone.

PS, this video is hilarious. I love that this kid just made this video and put it out there. The internet can be so fun!

Sunday's Song

I honestly cannot get enough of this song!

It came on as I pulled into my parent's house in Lancaster Pennsylvania for Christmas and it made my mascara run as the lyrics and mood just did not fit...

While I was in Lancaster I was so homesick for Providence and for what my Christmas was the year prior. This is nothing against my family in PA; they spent last Christmas with me up in Rhode Island and it was wonderful...the tears had everything to do with a feeling of being displaced in NYC and not feeling I fully had a home yet in my new life. I think I also felt sad because I was going to Lancaster alone, well, with Malomar...as my sister and her husband were in Czech Republic visiting his family for the holidays.

That feeling has subsided BIG TIME and I feel very much at home in Brooklyn now, so now each time this song comes on, my heart fills up with happiness. Brooklyn is my home and feel pretty damn great about it!

A side note...this song sometimes pops into my head in some of my happiest moments!

Sunday's Song

So this song comes up often on my Marina and the Diamonds pandora station when I drive to work.  I love finding new music, and I actually first heard Marina and the Diamonds when one of their videos was featured in a blog that I like to read.

Marina and the Diamonds is not really the type of music I would seek out by myself, or even necessarily enjoy, but something about all that glitter sucked me in!

This song is by Passion Pit, and I like it because it is simple, makes me want to shake my booty, and always puts me in a good mood.

For this beautifully sunny Sunday, here is Sunday's song:
